“We need analytics” is not yet a measurement plan. A small service website may need to know whether visitors reach its enquiry page, while an editorial site may want to understand which navigation labels lead people to useful articles. Those questions do not automatically require the same tool or the same amount of data.
Write one decision the information will support. If the decision is whether to simplify a long form, a count of completed submissions alongside visits to that form may be relevant. A large dashboard of unrelated audience charts will not explain where the form becomes confusing.
Identify the event carefully. Clicking Send is different from a valid submission, and a valid submission is different from an enquiry someone answers. Name the measurement according to what it actually records. Avoid reporting a button click as a completed sale when payment happens elsewhere.
Read the diagram as text
- Decision: Would simplifying this form help people finish an enquiry?
- Event definition: Count the accepted submission, not merely a press of Send.
- Collection review: Inspect data fields, provider behavior and applicable notice or consent.
- Verification: Use invented input; check that one submission produces one intended event.
A Send click is not evidence of a valid enquiry or a completed sale.
Read the provider's documentation about collected data, storage, identifiers and transfers. A plugin can be only the installation mechanism for an external service. The privacy implications depend on the actual configuration and audience, not on whether the WordPress setup screen calls it lightweight.
Review applicable consent and notice requirements before enabling tracking. Do not assume that a cookie-free label settles every privacy obligation, or that a generic banner makes every implementation appropriate. The public policy should describe the service actually used and the choices actually available.
Keep private information out of event names and URLs sent to a provider. A search query, form value or account identifier can reveal more than a basic page view. Test the outgoing events with invented data and check that the same action is not recorded twice by overlapping integrations.
Assign someone to review the chosen measurement and decide what would justify a change. If nobody uses a metric, question whether collecting it is worthwhile. Begin with a narrow, understandable setup, document it and expand only when another concrete question calls for additional information.
